Description
Seven local organizations plan to join a nationwide wave of marches and demonstrations against the Trump administration's family separation policy by holding a short march in Champaign on June 30 at 1:15 p.m.
Marchers will gather at 1 p.m. at the corner of Green and Neil streets.
Sponsoring organizations include Bend the Arc:CU, Champaign County ACLU, C-U Fair, C-U Indivisible, Champaign-Urbana Progressives (CUP), Sanctuary of the People, and The People's Agenda.
“The Trump administration's practice of ripping immigrant children from the arms of their families isn't just cruel and inhumane—it's the latest sign that our country is in a state of moral emergency,” says Diane Ore, chair of Bend the Arc:CU, one of the sponsoring groups. “If we don't speak out, the president will only feel empowered to go to even more dangerous and violent extremes.”
Adds the president of the Champaign County ACLU, Carol Spindel, “It's up to us, we the people, to raise our voices and resist these inhumane policies against immigrants. We cannot stand by and say nothing while our government separates children from their families with intentional cruelty. Champaign County ACLU urges the people of Champaign-Urbana to join us.”
More information on the march can by found on the Facebook pages of the seven sponsoring organizations.
