Description
As part of our commitment to criminal justice reform, we are excited to share that we have joined the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice. We will be working with them to support the SAFE-T Act and to end mass incarceration by addressing the root causes of socio-economic and racial inequity in our legal system.
Illinois passed the SAFE-T Act last year—however, it has not yet been fully implemented. The law's provision to end cash bail is presently being held up in litigation because of disinformation and fear. We know that protecting this bill is critical for racial equity and to end the criminalization of poverty.
Join us for our next membership event where we will be joined by Matt McLaughlin from the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice to learn more about the campaign and how we'll be taking action as a chapter.
Matt will share more about the effort to end wealth-based pretrial incarceration and answer any questions. We will discuss opportunities for community involvement in education, court-watching and more, so be sure to come out if you're interested in criminal justice reform!
