Since May 9, members of Congress have been working to force House Speaker Paul Ryan to hold votes on the several legislative fixes still before the House for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Their method, called a Discharge Petition, needs 218 signatures to force Ryan to hold the votes. There are currently 215 from both Democrats and Republicans.
As of May 29, Rodney Davis has not signed the petition to force the DACA votes. This is despite the fact that he was one of 34 Republicans who signed a letter in early December urging Ryan to hold a vote on DACA before the end of 2017. In fact, Davis told us in a face-to-face meeting last October that he wants to find a way to keep DACA recipients here. If that's the case, then why hasn't he joined his 215 colleagues in signing this petition?
It's time to force Rodney Davis to prove he meant what he said by calling his office and signing this petition to demand that he add his signature to the Discharge Petition. For wont of five votes, DACA might die yet again in Congress.
So call Representative Davis' office today! The Champaign office number is: 217.403.4690. When a staffer or the answering machine picks up your call give your name and zip code and then say in your own words:
“I am asking Congressman Davis to please add his name to the discharge petition to force a vote on immigration in the house of representatives. Thank you.”
If you feel so inclined you can add something like Immigration is key to our country’s economic growth” or “We must provide a path to citizenship for the young people brought to this country by their parents so that they would have a chance at life. Sending them back to countries where there is little education available and no opportunity is just wrong.”
And Please sign the petition after calling by clicking on the add your signature button.
