Bend the Arc Weighs In on Rep. Mary Miller’s Hitler Comments

Bend the Arc: Rep. Mary Miller should lose committee assignments for Hitler comment

Incoming congresswoman rebuked for claiming “Hitler was right” in speech in front of Capitol

WASHINGTON – Bend the Arc: Jewish Action is calling for incoming congresswoman Mary Miller to lose any committee assignments she would have received during this session for claiming “Hitler was right” in a speech on Wednesday in front of the U.S. Capitol.

Miller, who was elected in November from southern Illinois, made the remarks during a rally promoted by the white supremacist “Proud Boys” group. Miller was quickly rebuked by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who is Jewish.

“House Republicans set an important, if sadly necessary, precedent in 2019 when they removed then-Rep. Steve King (R-IA) from his committee https://www.change.org/p/rep-mary-miller-demand-rep-mary-miller-resignassignments over King’s endorsement of white supremacists and his long legacy of antisemitic and racist remarks,” said Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action. “Congress should uphold that precedent by barring committee assignments from Rep. Miller and other incoming Republicans who have used racism, antisemitism, and conspiracy theories to spread fear and division, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and Madison Cawthorn (R-NC).

The election results in November and this week in Georgia show that the American people have rejected those who wield bigotry and hatred for political gain. Politicians who praise Hitler and cite antisemitic conspiracy theories while undermining our democracy must learn that freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from accountability. If Republicans were serious about condemning white nationalism and antisemitism when they demoted Steve King, they should apply the same standard to Miller and other incoming lawmakers who express similar beliefs that erode our democracy and endanger our communities.”
