April Membership Meeting

Description

As part of our commitment to organizing for racial and economic justice and transforming our systems of public safety, we are proud to announce that we are once again partnering with the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice to pass the Pretrial Success Act.

The Pretrial Success Act would allocate funding to provide essential services for people awaiting trial, including case navigation services, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and transportation to court appearances. These vital pretrial services would help break the cycle of arrest, incarceration and rearrest and give people a more hopeful future.

Join us for our next membership meeting on Thursday, April 11 to learn more about the campaign to pass the Pretrial Success Act and how we are taking action as a chapter.

The Pretrial Success Act build on our previous work to successfully pass the Pretrial Fairness Act, becoming the first state in the country to completely end money bail. We have seen in the months since Illinois ended money bail, that the number of people incarcerated while awaiting trial has begun to drop. This means more people are able to remain in their communities, keep their jobs, and maintain housing. We now have an opportunity to further set up people awaiting trial for success by providing services which address underlying challenges which might have led to their arrest in the first place.

We know that community safety starts with everyone having access to the resources they need to succeed and thrive. The Pretrial Success Act is a huge step in investing in communities most impacted by the criminal legal system by providing essential services and support.
